Joe Montana comes off the bench and leads Notre Dame to a 31-24 win over Purdue on Sept. 24, 1977 at Ross-Ade Stadium. Montana rallies the Irish to 17 points and the victory, throwing a 13-yard touchdown pass to Ken MacAfee with 1:39 left. The Boilermakers’ Mark Hermann throws for 351 yards and three touchdowns but is picked off four times. The Irish go on to win the next nine games and capture the national championship.
