Texas stops Joe Namath inches short of the goal line late in the game to beat the Crimson Tide 21-17 on January 1, 1965. Alabama is named national champion prior to the contest and comes into the game unbeaten. Ernie Koy scores two touchdowns for the Longhorns, including a 79-yard run in the first quarter. Namath does not start because of a knee injury but throws for 255 yards and two touchdowns and is named MVP. It is the first night game in Orange Bowl history.
