Notre Dame defeats Alabama 24-23 in the Sugar Bowl on Dec. 31, 1973 at Tulane Stadium in New Orleans. It is the first meeting ever between the two schools and features legendary coaches Paul “Bear” Bryant of Alabama and Ara Parseghian of Notre Dame. Both teams come into the game with unbeaten records. There are six lead changes in the game, and a fourth quarter field goal by Bob Thomas gives the Irish the winning margin.
